Gabiley District Gabiley town is the capital of Gabiley region. It is located in the arterial highway connecting most parts of the west side of Somaliland and is 58 km west of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland. Gabiley is classified as a type district in district grading system of Somaliland and governed by 13 district councils headed by the mayor and regional government body lead by the governor. The District shares borders with Awdal Region at west, Hargeisa region on east, Aden Bay on the north and on south with Ethiopia. Gabiley is the second densest populated area of the nine Districts in the Maroodi-jeeh region, and occupies a land area of approximately 4,300 km2. The majority of food production is found in this district, making up to 85% of Somaliland food sources. Somaliland's rural population is 65% and urban areas are 35%, in the last few decades there has been an increase in rural urban migration which has been reported in 2021 to be 46% of the urban population, due to worsening climate such as drought repetitive. Gabiley city is the capital of the district as well as the capital of Gabiley region. The district has an estimated current population of around 320,430.
